BGM is a movement dedicated to increasing math confidence, awareness, enthusiasm, identity, fluency, & persistence in children. Brittany Rhodes founded Black Girl MATHgic, a company focused on increasing math confidence and decreasing math anxiety among young Black girls. Black Girl MATHgic provides monthly subscription boxes to make math more relatable, understandable, and fun for its subscribers.

Here are some critical details about Brittany Rhodes and Black Girl MATHgic:

  1. Brittany Rhodes:
    • Background: Brittany has experience in engineering, having earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. This foundational knowledge in a math-intensive field inspired her to create Black Girl MATHgic.
    • Motivation: Brittany recognized a lack of representation and resources specifically to boost math confidence among Black girls. She sought to address this gap with her personal experiences and background by creating a product that would resonate with young Black girls and their families.
  2. Black Girl MATHgic:
    • Subscription Box: The Black Girl MATHgic box is a monthly subscription service that delivers curated math lessons and activities. Each pack contains real-world math lessons, fun educational items, a profile of a Black woman mathematician, and more.
    • Objective: The company’s primary goal is to help Black girls build strong math identities and see the real-world applications of math. By presenting math in a fun and relatable way, the subscription boxes aim to reduce math anxiety and boost confidence.
    • Impact: Through her initiative, Brittany Rhodes seeks to make a positive impact on young Black girls’ perceptions of math, encouraging them to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields in the future.
